Fondé par Hans Rabe et Jürgen Göldner, Softgold a pour objectifs de développer des jeux originaux, adapter et éditer des productions internationales sur le marché européen, et enfin de ré-éditer des classiques sous forme de compilations.
Softgold est une division de la société allemande Rushware Microhandelsgesellschaft. Elle a été rachetée et fusionnée en mars 1992, tout comme Rushware, et son autre division, ABC Spielspass, par la société de contrôle Funsoft Holding. Fin 1998, l'ensemble a été acquis par l'américain Toy HeadQuarters (THQ) qui désirait une implantation européenne pour éditer et distribuer ses titres. Cette acquisition s'est élevée à 4,5 millions de dollars en actions THQ et à 1,5 million de dollars en cash. R.I.P.
