Ce deuxième E³ montre une accélération de la tendance chez les jeux PC : de moins en moins souvent conçus sous DOS, et de moins en moins de graphismes 2D. Les éditeurs commencent à plébisciter les cartes 3D, sans se mettre d'accord sur un standard. L'option du jeu en réseau est de plus en plus courante.
Chez les consoles, c'est la guerre des tranchées : Nintendo montre enfin son Ultra 64, qui ne s'appelle plus Ultra 64 mais Nintendo 64, et son premier jeu qui est évidemment l'impressionnant Super Mario 64 (le nommage des produits n'a pas dû consommer trop de jours-homme). Gros succès, surtout pour un prix annoncé de 249$. Sony, qui a déjà écrasé la Saturn de Sega aux Etats-Unis, baisse immédiatement le prix de sa PlayStation à 199$, et Sega est obligé de faire de même dans la foulée. A part ça, Atari fait acte de présence, SNK et la 3DO ont disparu de la circulation.
